Enervent Zehnder ventilation equipment solutions were customized for the valuable building on Bulevardi in Helsinki

In the spring of 2022, the valuable property on Helsinki’s Bulevardi will be renovated back into high-quality apartments after being in commercial use for a long time. The architect Arkkitehtitoimisto Neva, which specializes in historic buildings, has been responsible for the design. The material and equipment choices of the neo-renaissance building have been made carefully to the smallest detail, taking into account the spirit and history of the house.

There will be 28 apartments in the building on Bulevardi 14. They range in size from a comfortable studio apartment to several hundred square meters of representative housing. In addition, the complex includes 11 commercial premises, of which some are aimed at consumer customers and are located at street level.

The ventilation of the valuable building is implemented with modern technology. The ventilation of each apartment is tailored for the apartment. Like all other products selected, the ventilation equipment has a high standard. Enervent Zehnder supplies ventilation units for all apartments and commercial premises – a total of five different unit models are required.

The building technology is being renewed under the supervision of the Helsinki City Museum

Heikki Sivonen is responsible for Lämpökarelia’s Southern Finland unit, which is responsible for the renovation of the HVAC technology in the building. The responsibility is considerable, as the entire building and building technology of the building will be renovated. An additional challenge is that no visible changes may be made to the historic facade of the house.

– Together with the designer, it was our responsibility to find the best solution and equipment for the ventilation. Our goal was to have units from the same supplier in all premises, which always facilitates logistics and planning of installation work. It will continue to play a role in future service and warranty matters. Enervent Zehnder was able to put together a customized package that corresponds to our request for quotation, Heikki Sivonen says.

Sivonen was already familiar with Enervent Zehnder’s products from previous projects.

– Enervent has rotary heat exchangers suitable for the northern climate in all its units. The units are easy to use and user friendly. In addition, they are elegantly simple on the outside which makes them fit unobtrusively into the premises of Bulevardi 14 type objects, where all users appreciate the high-quality finish, confirms Sivonen.

Suitable ventilation solutions for all squares metres

The apartment-specific ventilation equipment has been carefully selected for the dwellings in Bulevardi 14, considering the requirements and special needs of apartments of different sizes. The airflow capacity of the ventilation unit and its location determine the best option for each apartment.

– Our smallest units are compact ventilation units that are equipped with electric after heating. In smaller apartments, the ideal use of space has also been considered. In these, the Salla ventilation unit is imperceptibly placed, for example, on top of a wardrobe. Larger apartments have their own utility rooms, where it has been natural to place the unit. Correspondingly, the air volume demand of these apartments is higher, and they also provide cooling for each apartment via the ventilation system, when the solution is combined with district cooling, says Ronni Laaksonen, who is responsible for Enervent Zehnder’s sales.

– Depending on the size of the apartments and the air volume needed, Pingvin XL, Pelican Z or Pegasos Z ventilation unit models have been selected for the most spacious apartments. In street-level commercial premises, ventilation is provided by Enervent Pallas, which has a larger capacity.

Descendants know the architect Waldemar Aspelin, who designed the building at the time, as a stylist. In honour of its 125th anniversary in 2021, Bulevardi 14 will return to its original use. It will once again become an impressive residential building in one of Helsinki’s most important blocks.

Enervent Zehnder received international certification for its residential ventilation units

Enervent Zehnder, a manufacturer of ventilation equipment for the northern European climate, has received impartial third-party certification for all ventilation units developed for residential ventilation. The Eurovent Certified Performance mark indicates that the certification of the company’s equipment is internationally recognized and approved.

Enervent Zehnder Oy, which specializes in residential ventilation solutions, has been manufacturing ventilation equipment in Porvoo in Southern Finland for more than 30 years. Many know the company as Enervent. The Swiss Zehnder Group became its owner in 2018.

Recognition by the independent Eurovent Certita Certification Body (ECC) facilitates the comparability and classification of ventilation equipment on the international market. The ECC tests examine both the energy efficiency and consumption as well as the heat recovery efficiency of the equipment to be certified.

– The EU Ecodesign Directive and the Energy Labeling Regulation for ventilation units is about the energy efficiency of the products and at the same time define which are so-called residential ventilation units, ie units developed for residential use. A residential ventilation unit is a unit with a maximum airflow not exceeding 250 cubic meters per hour or a maximum airflow of 250 to 1,000 cubic meters per hour – and the manufacturer has stated that it is intended exclusively for residential properties, says Tom Palmgren, Chief Technology Officer at Enervent Zehnder.

In addition to Finland, Enervent Zehnder sells its ventilation equipment to other Nordic countries and northern Central Europe. Eurovent certification strengthens the company’s export trade.

– We obtained certification for all our ventilation units with heat recovery and heat pump technology for ventilation in residential buildings. More specifically, this means the unit series Pinion, Salla, Svea, Pingvin XL, Pandion, Pelican, Alta, LTR-3 and LTR-5.

– Our role in Zehnder Group is to be an expert on ventilation in cold climate. Certification by an impartial body is an important guarantee of quality for us as an export company around the world. As with many other products, national certifications are available for ventilation equipment. However, their importance is limited when going beyond domestic borders, Palmgren recalls.

Zehnder Group 125 years

Zehnder – making history. Since 1895

This year, Zehnder is celebrating its 125th anniversary. Over the years, the company has undergone a constant process of change, continually reinventing itself in line with the times. In 1895, Jakob Zehnder established his small workshop in Gränichen in Switzerland. This step marked the first page in a success story that the fourth generation of the Zehnder family continues to write to the present day. Whether as a bicycle workshop or as the producer of the legendary “Zehnderli” light motorcycle, the name Zehnder has always been synonymous with innovation and ingenious approaches. In 1930, the company revolutionised the market with the introduction of the world’s first steel tube radiator – Zehnder Charleston – a classic radiator that remains a popular choice to this day. However, the company didn’t stop at decorative radiators: over the years, the range expanded to include products for comfortable indoor ventilation, heat exchangers, heating and cooling ceiling systems, and clean air solutions for use in industry. The company’s strong pioneering spirit saw it transform from a small mechanical workshop to an international group of companies with around 3500 employees spread across 70 countries.

Zehnder – shaping the future

The Zehnder Group is committed to achieving further milestones and intends to play an active part in shaping the future. “The foundation for these goals is the enormous amount of trust placed in us by our customers. Securing this trust is our overarching priority, and we want to achieve this together with our dedicated and committed employees,” says chairman of the board of directors Hans-Peter Zehnder. With its energy-efficient solutions for a healthy and comfortable indoor climate, the Group is taking into account the growing awareness of the importance of healthy living, the environment and sustainability. A passion for innovation paired with forward planning and sustainable action will continue to form the guiding principles by which Zehnder is able to meet and exceed its customers’ expectations.

Zehnder is looking forward to writing the next chapter in this extraordinary success story together with you.

The new Managing Director of Enervent Zehnder is Thomas Söderholm

Thomas Söderholm, M.Sc., has started as the Managing Director of Enervent Zehnder Oy. As an experienced international business leader, he wants to strengthen the company’s commercial position in key markets.

Enervent Zehnder has appointed Thomas Söderholm as its Managing Director. Söderholm took up the position on 11th May. Born in Vaasa, Söderholm has worked for Tikkurila Oyj for several years, most recently as the CEO of the German subsidiary for six years. In addition to this, he has extensive experience in a variety of roles in both B2B and consumer business in industry, professional services and international trade.

The transition to Enervent Zehnder was due to interest in the technology and export trade.

“I already knew the name of the company, and when I got to know it better, its high-level technological know-how and long-term export trade, as well as the Zehnder Group’s convincing position in the market, immediately attracted me,” says Thomas Söderholm.

Commercial grip and development of competitiveness promised

The new Managing Director says he will strengthen Enervent Zehnder’s profile as a manufacturer and solution provider of high-quality ventilation technology. “We have always produced the best technology on the market, which guarantees not only a healthy and pleasant indoor climate, but also important energy efficiency. Our competitiveness is good and we intend to strengthen our commercial position, especially in our main markets in the Nordic countries”.

“Ties to the Zehnder group are flexible. We have clear goals and quite free hands to build growth in line with the market. I see a lot of opportunities in that. We are exploring how to increase the products we offer from the Zehnder Group’s range. For example, certain air distribution products complement our unit range perfectly”, he adds.

“We are also looking for competitiveness by renewing our unit range so that it effectively meets the needs of our customers. New models will be announced a little later”.

Thomas Söderholm has acquired a wide range of language skills in international assignments. In addition to his native Swedish, he is fluent in Finnish, English, German and also speaks French and Japanese. In his spare time, he plays sports and moves actively with his family on land and at sea.

Changes in product range

There has been some significant changes in our product range for 2020. We have decided to ramp down some products, we have developed new products and we have updated some existing products.

  • LTR-5 Z is a completely new product. LTR-5 Z will replace the LTR-4 and the LTR-6 product range by 1st March.
  • We have updated the Pelican range with new fans. The new product range is called Pelican Z. Thanks to the new fans Pelican Z has bigger air volumes, but less sound. Pelican Z is available from 1st March.
  • We are also updating the Pegasos and LTR-7 product ranges with new fans. Following the same logic, the new product ranges are called Pegasos Z and LTR-7 Z. The new fans have such a wide air flow range, that they will replace both Pegasos and Pegasos XL as well as LTR-7 and LTR-7 XL. These new fans are also quieter than the old ones. We estimate that Pegasos Z and LTR-7 Z are available from 1st May.
  • We have decided to ramp down the whole Neo product range. These products are not available anymore. Please ask for recommendations for replacing products.

Spare part selection for Enervent AC control reduced

Enervent developed its first digital control, the AC control, for its units in 2003. Ventilation units with AC control were manufactured 2003–2008. The electronics industry has developed tremendously in recent years. Rapid development has led to components becoming obsolete quickly. That is what happened to some of the electronic components in the AC control. The motherboard and control panel for the AC control can no longer be delivered because the manufacturing of certain components has been stopped.
This means that if the motherboard or control panel breaks down on a unit with AC control, the entire unit must be replaced. There are fortunately also advantages of replacing a ventilation unit of at least ten years with a new one. Development has taken place also in the ventilation sector. Replacing the unit improves both energy efficiency and reliability as the new unit has DC motors, more functions and of course 0 hours behind it.
Other spare parts such as components for the heat exchanger and fans are still available for units with AC control.

The new Enervent Alta is a silent ventilation unit for smaller spaces

Enervent introduces a new air ventilation unit specifically designed for apartments. Because the unit is particularly silent and easy to install, it doesn’t require a utility or services room or a separate cupboard.

Enervent Alta is the newest member of Enervent’s apartment-specific air ventilation unit family. Designed for smallish apartments and other smaller spaces, the air ventilation unit is a novel solution, both technically and in terms of its design.

Because it is so silent, Enervent Alta can be installed in the most practical and convenient location, such as behind a false ceiling, in a walk-in cupboard, or in the bathroom, as it does not require a separate utility or services room or a cupboard.

Enervent Alta comes with an integrated connector for the range hood extractor duct.

Enervent Alta is designed for fast and easy installation. Its power cable, control panel cable, and range hood indicator cable are installed on the outside of the unit, so there is no need to open the unit’s case for electrical connections.

Enervent Alta is fitted with a rotary heat exchanger. Its energy class is A, and the maximum air flow is 87 l/s (100 Pa). The unit is controlled by a versatile and easy-to use control system known as eWind, which has been developed by Enervent.

Neo is conquering Europe

A new multi flat building project in Switzerland has chosen Enervent Neo eWind E as ventilation unit in all flats. The unit was chosen because it fits in an ordinary cabin of 60 cm. The ventilation units are hidden in one of the cabins in the hallway. This is a very practical solution from many perspectives, not least maintenance.
